I built two tax assets, but this post isn't about tax

A few weeks ago, I found myself deep in a doc, building logic for an Income and Advance Tax Calculator.
Not because it was in the roadmap. Not to "ship fast". Just because I spotted a gap, and couldn't stop thinking about how to close it.
So I asked myself the obvious: does the world really need another tax calculator?
At first glance, maybe not. There are already dozens out there. But many I tried:
- Skipped surcharge or handled cess inconsistently.
- Weren't built for business entities like firms or companies.
- Missed marginal relief completely.
- Or hadn't even been updated for the current financial year.
So I built one. And then another.
- An Income and Advance Tax Calculator, designed across entity types, regimes, and quarterly schedules.
- A GST Interest Calculator, to simplify Section 50 interest calculations.
I'm not a coder. But I'm a Chartered Accountant-turned-fintech marketer who's spent years simplifying complex tax and financial concepts for people who just want clear answers.
So this time, instead of writing another explainer, I built the actual thing!
With AI, product instinct, and support from a few kind teammates, it came together. And I'm grateful to work at a company that gives you the space to explore, create, and quietly contribute, without needing a big brief.
These assets aren't perfect. They're not meant to be. But they're usable, thoughtful, and hopefully helpful.
And building them reminded me of something we often forget as we chase metrics, MRR, and momentum:
- You don't always need a mandate to build something meaningful.
- Sometimes, noticing is enough. Following through is the differentiator.
It also reminded me why I've always admired what HubSpot did with Website Grader, or how Moz built trust with Open Site Explorer. They weren't made to sell. They were made to solve. And in doing so, they built trust, before the pitch, before the funnel.
As Ann Handley often emphasizes: your content isn't about you. It's about what you do for others. That's the kind of product-led growth I believe in. Not the kind that chases attention. The kind that creates clarity.
So if you're second-guessing whether to build something that "already exists", ask:
- Does it solve the problem better?
- Would you use it?
- Does it reduce friction for someone else?
If yes, build it.
Because sometimes, the smallest assets reflect the sharpest thinking. And if it helps even one person plan better or feel less stuck, I'm glad I built it.
Try them: the Advance Tax Calculator and the GST Interest Calculator.
